A GREAT business opportunity!

“Consumers are 66% more likely to purchase a product if they believe the company is environmentally conscious.” — BusinessWeek

In a PREVIOUS POST, I explained the huge impact paper manufacturing processes have on our environmental resources. Additionally, there is not a person reading this who cannot find numerous ways that paper impacts their life. The choices we make in paper will play a crucial roll in our carbon footprint, the effect our choices have on the environment around us.

As a decision maker in a business, one might ask why they would pay a higher price for an environmentally friendly product if they can save money with another, less friendly option. The bottom line is that being environmentally conscious is also good business.

A 2007 study by Cone Consumer Environmental Survey found that 83% of respondents trust a company more if it is socially and/or environmentally responsible. Another report by Text 100 shows that revenue for environmentally related products is expected to explode to $165 billion by 2015. Another survey reported by Chain Store Age in Oct. 2007 showed that generation Y’s attitude cares about their environment and 47% said they would pay more for environmentally friendly services, products, and brands. These studies show there is a huge opportunity for businesses.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) developed their certifications as an alternative to traditional recycling, since recycled paper products are not a viable solution for many client applications. FSC and SFI promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests. Certified paper is “virgin” paper where the tree is planted, the pulp is made and the paper is manufactured by companies that have demonstrated their environmental vision.

We would like to show you how to incorporate this statement of your responsible stewardship of our environmental resources in your next communications project.
